Beer is regarded as one of the ancient and most used alcoholic beverages ever throughout the entire world. It has taken thousands of years and it remains a favorite drink among culturally diverse people. Despite the fact that there are thousands of types of beer that exist today, the principles of beer are very simple.
Essentially, beer is an alcoholic beverage, which has been fermented using four basic ingredients which include, water, malted grains, hops and yeast. The brewing process comprises the combination of these ingredients to bring about the flavors, aroma and alcohol content that make beer of different types.
Water is the most significant part of a beer in that on an average 90 percent of the beer is made up of water. The mineral content of water can influence the final product as this will impact on taste and character of the end product. The grains are malted (usually barley), a process that is transformed into alcohol by an action of yeast. In the malting process, the grains are soaked, germinated and dried in order to be utilized in the brewing process. These grains also provide color and taste, however; they are light golden and dark roasted.
The flowers are hops and they provide the beer with the flavor, aroma and bitterness. They contribute to the sweetness of the malt and prevent the beer spoilage. Different hop varieties can possess citrus, pine, flowery or herbal taste.
The microorganism that is used in fermentation is yeast. During fermentation, the malt is decomposing into sugar that is undergoing use by the yeast and which leads to the production of alcohol and carbon dioxide. The majority of the depths of flavour that differentiate the types of beers are also created during the process.
Brewing process is typically a process which involves mashing of the grains, boiling the mixture along with hops, cooling the liquid and allowing fermentation of the liquid by the yeast. The fermentation process may be proceeded with the aging, filtering, or carbonation of the beer and then be packaged.
